Low-end · about 2 GB RAM
Keep it at native speed
- Backend: OpenGL on old Android, Vulkan if it stays stable
- Rendering resolution: 1× PSP
- Frameskip: 1, Auto on
- Texture scaling and post-process: off
- Fast Memory on · Skip buffer effects only as a last resort
Mid-range · Snapdragon 680 class
Balanced HD
- Backend: Vulkan
- Rendering resolution: 2× PSP
- Simulate block transfer: on
- Frameskip: 0 · speedhacks off
- Fast Memory and I/O on thread: on
High-end phones and desktop GPUs
Push resolution, not hacks
- Backend: Vulkan · MSAA 4×–8× if the GPU keeps 60 FPS
- Rendering resolution: 4× or 8×
- Anisotropic filtering 4×–8×
- GPU texture upscalers (including NNEDI3 and Spline36 in 1.20.4) only if frames stay smooth
- All speedhacks off
The settings that matter most
Most visual and performance issues trace back to a small set of graphics options. Change one at a time, restart the game, and keep only what helps.
| Setting |
What it changes |
Practical rule |
| Backend |
Vulkan, OpenGL, or Direct3D 11 |
Try Vulkan first. Fall back if you get a black screen or crashes. |
| Rendering resolution |
Multiplies native 480×272 output |
2× is the usual phone upgrade. Each step costs GPU time. |
| Simulate block transfer |
PSP VRAM copies between buffers |
Leave on. Fixes missing shadows and effects in many titles. |
| Texture scaling |
Upscales in-game textures |
Expensive on budget chips. Prefer anisotropic filtering first. |
Audio
Crackling usually means the buffer is too small. Raise Audio latency one step at a time under Settings → Audio. Turn off Audio stretching if music sounds warped. On Windows, if PPSSPP exits before the menu appears, try switching between WASAPI and DirectSound in ppsspp.ini.
System toggles people overuse
I/O on thread helps when storage sleeps mid-session. Multithreaded (experimental) often slows games; leave it off unless you are testing. Fast Memory should stay on for single-player. If you must disable it, that title is worth reporting on the community forum.
Per-game overrides exist: PPSSPP stores them separately, so a broken title may not match your global defaults. Open Game Settings → Restore game-specific settings to clear them.
Presets did not fix it?
Restore graphics defaults, then work through the symptom table on the troubleshooting page. Change one setting at a time and restart the game after each test.
